Anti-tobacco day:
Anti-tobacco day was observed at Government Medical College here on Monday. Dr B.L. Goyal, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, and Dr A.S. Padda, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine, who were present on the occasion underlined the need for creating awareness among people regarding the harmful effects of tobacco.

FEROZEPORE
Announced:
The Minister of State for Cooperation and Sainik Welfare, Punjab, Mr Janmeja Singh Sekhon, announced a grant of Rs 50,000 each for the development of community centre and cremation ground at Fidde village. He announced this at a function held in the village on Sunday.

LUDHIANA
Inspector suspended:
Mr Subhash Uppal, a unit Inspector, Zone B, Municipal Corporation, has been suspended for not checking unauthorised constructions in Baba Gajja Jain Colony and other places under his jurisdiction.

Scientists: The International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has named Dr Gurdip Singh, Senior Plant Pathologist-cum-incharge Pulses Section, Department of Plant Breeding, and Dr Om Parkash Jhorar, Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural Meteorology, PAU, as visiting scientists.

NAWANSHAHR
Lions Club:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Lions Club: President — Mr Iqbal Singh; Secretary — Mr Gurjit Singh Saraf; and Treasurer — Mr Satnam Singh Garcha.

Arya Samaj: Mr Prem Kumar Bhardwaj and Mr Surinder Mohan Tejpal have been elected President and General Secretary, respectively, of the local unit of the Arya Samaj.

Adhyapak Dal: Mr Bikker Singh Jattpur and Mr Rajinder Kumar Arora have been elected President and General Secretary, respectively, of the district unit of the Adhyapak Dal, Punjab.

Camp: The local Blood Donors Council organised a free medical check-up camp at Ruhani Manav Kendra here on Monday. As many as 70 children were examined.

Criticised: Mr Iqbal Singh, member, PPCC, Mr Pakher Singh Nimana, a former district President of the Congress, and others in a press statement issued here on Monday criticised the Nabha police for registering a case against the former Chief Minister, Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhattal. They threatened to launch state-wide agitation in case the case was not withdrawn.

PATHANKOT
New GMT:
Mr Tarsem Lal took over as the General Manager, Telecom, of Pathankot district here on Monday.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club (Service): President — Mr Gulshan, General Secretary — Mr R P Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Rajesh Arora.

Medical camp: A free medical check-up camp was organised at a mandir in Jaroli, 20 km from here. As many as 2700 patients were examined by a team of doctors from the Civil Hospital, Gurdaspur.

PHAGWARA
Fire:
A fire broke out in Glyder Industry here on Monday. Fire-engines from here and Jalandhar controlled the fire after four hours.

Case registered: Bhagmall, in charge police post, Satnampura, has been sent to the police lines for dereliction of duty in connection with group clash at Hadiabad on Saturday in which four persons were injured. Meanwhile, Mr Shamsher Singh, Inspector, said on Monday that the situation at Hadiabad was under control and a case under Sections 324, 348 and 349, IPC, had been registered against both the groups.top

Blamed: The Mayor, Mr Kewal Krishan Addiwal, on Tuesday blamed the media for projecting wrong faces of the Indian culture. Speaking at a face-to-face organised by the Rotary Club, he also advocated the indigenisation of foreign technology.

Celebrated: The Divine Life Society, Chandigarh branch, on Tuesday celebrated Sanyas Day of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj. A satsang was organised on the occasion, in which teachings of the swami were recalled.

PANCHKULA
Regional meet: The Samarpan Group, Panchkula, of Alcoholics Anonymous is organising a regional meet at Little Flower school in Sector 14 here to celebrate its third anniversary. A spokesman of the group said more than 100 members of Alcoholics Anonymous will participate.

Camp: Seventy persons donated blood at a camp organised by the Art of Living Foundation at Paploha village in Kalka on Sunday. five basic courses of art of living were also organised for the villagers.

Topped: Monika Bansal of Sant Isher Singh Model Senior Secondary School, Phase 7, has stood first in Ropar district in the commerce stream of plus-two examination conducted by the Punjab School Education Board. Gurwinder Kaur and Gurupdesh Kaur stood third and fourth, respectively.

Suicide:
Pintu (24), a trader, reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison here on Monday. A case has been registered.

HISAR
Centre inaugurated:
Haryana Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Faqir Chand Aggarwal has urged the social and voluntary organisations to act more vigorously in helping the disabled persons. He was speaking at a function after inaugurating the Handicapped Rehabilitation Centre here on Sunday. The centre, established by the Bharat Vikas Parishad and the Haryana Bharat Vikas Foundation, would provide artificial limbs and training to the disabled persons.

KAITHAL
Two held:
The police has arrested Rajiv and Parkash who were allegedly involved in triple murder case committed at Keorak village on Saturday. Giving this information, the SP, Mr Khushi Ram, said both have confessed the crime. The police has also recovered the weapons used in the crime.

PANIPAT
Wheat arrival:
As many as 14 wheat procurement centres have been established in the district, according to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Rastogi. He said 1.27 lakh tonne wheat had arrived at various purchase centres till Sunday.

Demonstration: Members of the Haryana Public Works Department Mechanical Workers Union will organise a demonstration in front of the office of the Public Health, Irrigation and PWD (B&R), on June 24. According to a press note of the union, the programme regarding the protest will be decided at a district-level meeting of the union on June 10.

Appointed: Mrs Raj Gahlot, Coordinator, All India Safai Majdoor Congress, has appointed Mrs Ram Rati Puhal as the district President of the Congress. Mrs Sarbati Devi and Mr Rakesh Kumar have been nominated Vice-President and Secretary, respectively, of the association.

ROHTAK
Meeting:
A meeting of the district unit of the Haryana Government PWD Mechanical Workers Union, affiliated to the Sarva Karamchari Sangh, Haryana, was held here on Monday and decided to hold a dharna on June 18 in protest against the non-acceptance of its demands. The demands include transfer and promotion policy and loan for marriages.

SIRSA
Open darbar:
A weekly open darbar was held at Patwar Bhawan here on Monday. As many as 120 complaints were received by the Deputy Commissioner. Most of the complaints were solved on the spot and other referred to the departments concerned.

SONEPAT
Protest:
A large number of residents, including members of the Subhash Traders Association, burnt an effigy of the Pakistan Prime Minister, Mr Nawaz Sharif, and raised anti-Pakistan slogans in Subhash Chowk here on Monday in protest against the attack in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

Dharna: Members of the HUDA Public Health Karamchari Union held a dharna in front of the HUDA office here on Monday. Mr Raghbir Singh Kataria, President of the district unit, has threatened to launch an indefinite agitation in case their demands were not accepted.

Rail traffic: Rail traffic on the DUK section of the Northern Railway remained disrupted for several hours following the derailment of two wagons of goods train between Sonepat and Sandal Kalan railway stations on Monday. However, train traffic became normal on Tuesday.top

PALAMPUR
Two killed
: Rajat Kumar (7) was killed near Vandana Hotel in Jwalamukhi in a road accident on Monday. A case under Section 279 and 304-A has been registered. In another incident, the door of the HRTC bus going from Dharamsala to Bharmour opened and Ravinder (35) fell out of the bus and killed on the spot. The accident took place near Kuthma village on Pathankot-Manali national highway. The police has registered a case.

SHIMLA
Retired:
Mr A.R Chauhan, Controller of Examinations, Himachal Pradesh University, retired on Monday after serving the university for about two decades.
