Girl dies of burn injuries

CHANDIGARH, Sept 11 — A resident of Sector 24 received serious burn injuries while her daughter died of burn injuries late last night.According to the police sources, Shiela (36) was warming food for her husband when her clothes caught fire.

While trying to save her, her 18-year-old daughter Malti also received burn injuries. While the latter succumbed to her injuries, Shiela is fighting for her life with almost 90 per cent burns.

Her statement was recorded by a magistrate as required under Section 174 of the CrPC. In her statement, she is reported to have said that it was an accident and no one had tried to burn her.

Her husband was in the police custody at the time of the accident for creating a nuisance in his locality while under the influence of liquor and was arrested under Section 34-5-61 of the Police Act.

Six injured: In various accidents in the city, six persons were injured and were admitted to the PGI.An unidentified vehicle hit Sunita, a resident of Industrial Area Phase II, when she was walking in Sector 20. Shambu Nath was injured when his cycle was hit by a truck near The Tribune roundabout.

Sanjay, a scooterist, was injured when he hit a motorcyclist in Sector 18. An unidentified vehicle hit and injured Sushma, a resident of Sector 46, who was driving a moped in the Sector 31 market.A motorcycle driver hit and injured an unidentified cyclist in Sector 34. A pedestrian, Sanjay, a resident of Sector 29, was hit and injured near the Cricket Stadium roundabout.

One arrested: The police have arrested Gurvinder Singh, a resident of Khuda Ali Sher village, on the charge of attempting to rape a student of a government school in Sector 22. A case under Sections 376 and 511 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Thief held: The police has arrested Krishan Kumar, a resident of Chando village in Haryana, for stealing a manhole cover. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

Cheating alleged: Mr Vinod Sethi, a resident of Sector 7, has reported to the police that Ram Pal and Ajay, his workers, have cheated him to the tune of Rs 1 lakh. A case has been registered under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC at the Sector 26 police station.

Case registered: A case has been registered against a scooterist Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Ram Darbar, for hitting and injuring Sabbar Ali, another scooterist. The case has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Bag stolen:Mrs Kusum, a resident of Sector 38, reported to the police that someone stole her leather bag containing Rs 4,000, a cheque for Rs 1,400, a gold ring, her driving license and her ATM card.A case has been registered under Section 379 of the IPC at the Sector 39 police station.S

Cars stolen:Two cars have been stolen from the township in the past 48 hours. According to the information available, Rajbir Singh, a resident of Phase VII, in a complaint lodged with the police, said his car was stolen on the night of September 10.In another case, Mr Raghbir Singh lodged a complaint with the police that his car was stolen on Friday. The police has registered two cases under Section 379 of the IPC.Back

Debjani's innovative dance

CHANDIGARH, Sept 11 — A bharatnatyam performace by Debjani Majumdar, a disciple of Guru Thankamoni Kutty of Kalamandalam, an exponent of bharatnatyam and mohiniattam, was organised today evening in the 37th baithak programme of Pracheen Kala Kendra in Sector 35 at its Bhaskar Rao Indoor Auditoroium.

Debjani commenced her perfromance with a traditional devotional item 'Kirtanam', based on Hansdhwani Raga in 'adi talam', an invocation to Lord Ganesha. Her next item, 'varnam', in praise of Lord Shiva, was based on Raga Mallika in 'adi talam'.

This was followed by a 'padam' in Hindi 'Aaj Aaye Shaym Mohana', a 200-year-old 'kriti' based on Durga Raga in 'mishra chappu talam'. Debjani attempted to braodbase her bharatnatyam by selecting 'kritis' in Hindi and Sanskrit, besides Tamil and Telugu, in an effort to relate to the North Indian audience.

She was ably supported by her guru, Kutty, who provided the 'nattuvangam'. Other supporting artistes included Sukumar G. Kutty, vocal artistes, S. Hariharan on flute, G. Suriyanarayanan on mridangam and Sukomoy Bhattacharya on sitar.

Debjani also presnted 'dashavataram', in praise of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, set to Ragamalika Raga in 'ek talam'. Her next presentation was padam, 'rati sukha saare' from Jayadev's 'Geet-Govindam'.

The concluding item of the evening was a 'tillana', followed by a 'mangalam', which was set to Kuntalavarali Raga.Back

Peas costliest in market

SAS NAGAR, Sept 11 — Priced at Rs 40 a kg, peas was the costliest item among commonly used vegetable in the local markets. Last week it was selling for Rs 30 a kg in the Phase 5 market. Another vegetable which registered an increase in its price was capsicum.

Other commonly used vegetables, however, have not registered much variation in their prices. Onion, which was selling for Rs 10 a kg, was still available for Rs 10 a kg. A superior quality of onion was being sold by a vendor in the Phase 4 market for Rs 12 a kg. Two different qualities of cauliflower was available for Rs 20 and Rs 24 a kg, respectively.

Potato was another vegetable which was available at Rs 4 a kg in Phase 9. Last week the vegetable was being sold for Rs 3 a kg. The better quality of potato was selling between Rs 8 a kg and Rs 10 a kg. A vendor in the Phase 4 market was selling capsicum for Rs 28 a kg. Last week the vegetable was available for Rs 30 a kg in the Phase 5 market.

Another vegetable commonly used in salad, cabbage was being sold by a vendor in the Phase 4 market between Rs 10 and Rs 12 a kg. The price of bittergourd remained stable at Rs15 a kg during the past one week. A vendor was selling brinjal in Phase 7 for Rs10 a kg.

In the Phase 4 market lady's finger was selling for Rs 12 a kg. Cucumber, another commonly consumed vegetable, was selling for Rs 8 a kg. The price of ginger varied between Rs 10 and 25 a kg. A vendor in the Phase 4 market was selling arbi for Rs 12 a kg.Back


 


Four shooting records set

CHANDIGARH, Sept 11 — four new records were set at Patialai Rao ranges, Sector 25, here today on the opening day of the 35th Punjab shooting championship. Abhinav Bindra shot 565 out of 600 in the men's air rifle ISSF. Nagendra Bhogal of Ludhiana scored 562 out of 600 in the men's air pistol ISSF. Simrat Dhillon of Ropar created a new record in air rifle peep sight ISSF (women) by scoring 353 out of 400. Ajit Chhabra of Ludhiana scored 282 out of 300 in .22 peep sight free rifle.

The following are the results: air rifle (OS) men- Nirmal Singh 1 (330/400), manish Kanwar 2 (301/400); air rifle junior women- Pushpinder Kaur 1 (279/400), Jasmeen Brar 2 (250/400).

Minkey hockey: The Active Sport (India), which conducted the novel experiment in various schools of the city on the modified sport concept with the help of Australian Sport commission last year, is back in the city with another one-day clinic on minkey hockey at Chandigarh. Ms Nadine Richards of the ASC will interact with sport teachers of various schools of the city at SD Public School, Sector 32, on September 13.

Last year Ms Judy Myers held the theory classes along with the modified sports at St John's school, sector 26. A mini sports festival was also conducted.

Minkey hockey will be for children in class IV onwards. Due to shortage of astro turf, it is played on basketball court having concrete surface. Ms Nadine Richards is development manager with ACT Hockey in Australia and is the tournament director of the Australian women's hockey (under-18) team.

Kho-kho championship: The Chandigarh Kho-Kho Association will hold the UT senior and sub-junior kho-kho championship at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, on September 18 and 19, according to a press note of the association. The meet is being sponsored by Jagatjit Industries Limited.

PEC Employees win: Superb bowling by Satish Chaudhry, who claimed four wickets for 17 runs, and Rajinder Singh, who took two wickets for five runs, helped Punjab Engineering college employees club defeat Fujitsu XI by 35 runs in the inaugural Friendship cup league cricket tournament. Chasing 107 runs scored by PEC employees club in 25 overs, Fujitsu XI were all out for 71 runs.

Brief scores: PEC Employees CC- 106 all out (Rajinder singh 29, Surinder 27, Ratan 4 for 8, Naresh 2 for 24, Pardeep 2 for 22); Fujitsu XI- 71 all out (Sukhpreet 18, Satish chaudhry 4 for 17, Rajinder singh 2 for 5, Surinder 2 for 21, lekh Raj 2 for 7).
