Boy rescued:
The police on Wednesday arrested Chhinder Kaur, alias Baljit Kaur, and recovered Ravi, a three-year-old boy who was allegedly abducted by her on August 31.

AMRITSAR
Fellowship:
Dr Anand Pal Singh, a lecturer of the local Khalsa College, has been selected by the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain, for a two-month fellowship. Earlier, he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship by the Ministry of Education, Spain, for two years.

FAZILKA
Bar association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Fazilka Bar Association: President — Mr Anil Jain; Vice-President — Mr Sanjeev Kamboj; Secretary — Mr Lakhwinder Handa; and Treasurer — Mr Rajesh Kalra.

GURDASPUR
Protest march:
More than 1,000 students of two Government Senior Secondary schools held a procession to the District Courts in protest against the brutal murder of a Dalit girl, Sunita of Bhambra, who was a student of Class XII. About 50 teachers of both schools also participated. A memorandum was presented to the Subdivisional Magistrate. Meanwhile, the accused, Ramesh Kumar, has been arrested.

Appointed: Mr Pawan Kumar Marwaha and Mr Jawahar Agarwal have been appointed President and General Secretary, respectively, of the local Lions Club at a function held on Thursday.

LUDHIANA
Deputy Speaker:
The Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Dr Baldev Raj Chawla, visited Ludhiana Acupuncture Medical College and Hospital on Friday. He was given a warm welcome by Mr Bhupinder Singh and Mr K.L. Malhotra, President and Secretary, respectively, of the institution.

NAWANSHAHR
Power supply:
Residents of Sharada Mohalla, Gulshan Bazar, Adarsh Nagar, Gandhi Chowk and Ghas Mandi are sore over the erratic power supply in these areas. They have alleged that their complaints are not attended to. They have also alleged that the PSEB authorities have been delaying installation of a transformer at Gandhi Chowk at the behest of some shopkeepers.

Research work:
The Cambridge Healthtech Institute, USA, has invited Dr Raman K. Verma, a lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Research, Punjabi University, to present his research work at a conference titled "The Drug Discovery Paradigm" to be organised by it at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, from September 15.

Homage paid: The youth Congress paid tributes to Lala Jagat Narayan on his death anniversary here on Thursday. Mr Sanjeev Sharma, President of the district unit of the youth Congress, said Lala Jagat Narayan had saved the state from terrorism by laying down his life and encouraged others to fight extremists which helped in restoring peace in the region.

Death anniversary: A blood donation camp was organised here on Friday by ARKS Senior Secondary School to mark the 20th death anniversary of Karamyogi Bir Dasondhi Ramji. Mr R.G. Verma (Chairman, Educational Institutions' SD Kumar Sabha, inaugurated the camp.

Talent hunt: Ismeet, Rubleen Sandhu and Sarita won the poetic symposium, declamation contest and mono-acting, respectively, at the talent hunt competition in GGS College for Women, Sector 26, on Saturday. Pratima, Sarla, Simmi and Surinder Kaur won in best dancer (classical), geet ghazal, folk song and best dancer (giddha) categories, respectively.

Function: Keeba Khurana has been declared Miss Fresher in the welcome function for newcomers in Government College for Girls, Sector 42. Payal Bajaj has been declared first runners-up and Yojna Chauhan has been adjudged second runners-up.

Competition: Gulneer won the cookery competition on the inaugural day of environment week celebrations in Government Home Science College on Saturday. Geet and Aparna were the winners in second category while Jasmin stood first in third category.

Fancy dress: Amanbir of Cherry Angel School, SAS Nagar, won the first prize in the fancy dress competition organised by City Beautiful Club, SAS Nagar, at Bal Bhawan on Saturday. More than 50 children in the age group of 2 to 6 years participated.

Saplings planted: About 200 saplings were planted by NSS volunteers at Government College for Men, Sector 11, on Saturday.

KHARAR
Camp:
The Health Department organised a non-scalpel vasectomy camp at the Civil Hospital on Saturday. As many as 22 operations were conducted.

PANCHKULA
Alleged:
The People's Voice God's Voice group alleged on Saturday contempt of court by the Haryana Urban Development Authority for misleading the public over the court order for removal of congress grass. It said HUDA employees were only cutting the congress grass instead of removing it.

Teachers honoured: Prof S.L. Goel and Prof Jitender Mohan have been honoured at Teachers' Day celebrations organised by the Lions Club Panchkula Central for their contribution in the field of public administration and psychology, respectively.

Elected: Mr Raj Kumar Gupta has been elected President of the Aggarwal Sabha for the year 1999-2000. A five-member committee comprising Mr Raj Kumar Gupta, Mr Chander Harsh Goel, Mr Moto Tam Jindal, Mr Baldev Bansal and Mr Bal Krishan Bansal has been authorised to elect other office-bearers and members of the executive committee.top

AMBALA
Resentment:
Resentment prevails among members of the Netraheen Jagriti Sangh over the failure of the police to trace their President, Sanjay Lamba, who has been missing since July 19. The General Secretary of the sangh, Mr Jagjit Saini, said in a statement on Friday that they would stage a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner on September 18 in this regard.

Group clash: Nine persons were injured in a group clash in the Model Town locality here on Friday night. According to the police, swords and knives were used in the scuffle which took place over a dispute between two groups. Both groups have lodged complaints against each other.

FATEHABAD
Handwriting competition:
The local DAV Centenary School organised a handwriting competition in Hindi and English on Saturday. Rahul Machal, Tavlin Bhatia, Shelly Batra and Mamta Raheja were adjudged first in their respective classes in Hindi handwriting. In the English competition, Kinja, Malika Choudhary, Shelly Batra, Parul and Ramita Batra got the first position in their respective classes.

HISAR
EC directive:
The district unit of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has criticised the decision of the Election Commission (EC) in which it had directed Mr Om Prakash Chautala to be away from the state during the polling on September 5. Mr Puran Singh Dabra and Mr Dalbir Panwar, President and General Secretary, respectively, of the district unit of the INLD said here on Saturday that Mr Chautala could not cast his vote because of the EC directive. The leaders demanded that the Central Government should look into the matter.

Traffic blocked: Employees of the Haryana Roadways in Hansi town blocked the Hisar-Delhi National Highway on Friday evening for about an hour in front of the bus stand to protest against the incident in which a yardmaster of the Hansi depot, Mr Krishan Kumar, was allegedly beaten up by some jeep drivers. The blockade was removed after an assurance by Mr Ramesh Verma, SDM, and Mr Raj Kumar , DSP, that the culprits would be arrested soon.

PANIPAT
Encroachments:
The menace of encroachments continues in the town with shopkeepers having reportedly made encroachments in front of their shops. Even the roads and footpaths have not been spared. The shopkeepers have not only encroached on the roadsides but have rented out the portions in front of their shops to reheriwallas.

Beaten to death: Mamar Ram, an operator in the Public Health Department, was beaten to death by two persons near Jorashi village under Samalkha police station on Friday. A case has been registered.

SIRSA
One killed:
One person was killed and another injured when their scooter collided with a bus near Kagdana village on Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Naresh Kumar of Gego Rani village.

Suicide: Amit Sharma of Mandi Dabwali died on Wednesday after consuming poison. According to sources, he consumed a poisonous substance and was shifted to Bathinda for treatment where he died.

Teacher arrested: Kulvinder Kathuria, a JBT teacher of Mamera village, was arrested on Wednesday by the Ellenabad police on a charge of molesting a minor girl.

SONEPAT
Smuggling bid:
The Rai police seized a truckload of 14 cows on the Sonepat-Baghpat road near Jagdishpur village on Friday. The cows were being smuggled to Uttar Pradesh. The SSP, Mr K. Selvraj, told newspersons here on Saturday that Rahim of Shikrao village had been arrested in this connection.

Blockade: Shopkeepers, traders and residents of colonies along the old DC road blocked traffic for about six hours near the Mamoon-Bhanja Chowk here on Friday in protest against the failure of the PWD (B&R) to repair the road for the past three years. Later in the evening, the Deputy Commissioner called a deputation of the demonstrators and assured them that he would look into the matter.

Buffaloes stolen: Six buffaloes are reported to have been stolen from the house of Mr Surinder Singh Malik, situated on the Sonepat-Murthal road near Vikram Palace, on Friday night. A case has been registered.

Medical camp: As many as 250 patients were examined by a team of doctors at a medical camp organised by the Bharat Vikas Parishad at Murthal village on Friday.top

Medical camp:
A medical camp was organised by Chetna, a social organisation, in memory of Krishana Nadda, mother of Himachal Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda at her native village Vijaypur on Thursday. As many as 540 persons were examined.

UNA
Murdered:
Mr Rajiv Kumar, son of Mr S.C. Sharma, advocate, was murdered by some persons on Friday while he was going in a Maruti car along with his friends to Pirnigaha temple. The assaliants stopped the car near Malahat village and attacked them.
