60 kg of poppy husk recovered

CHANDIGARH, Sept 20 — The police has recovered 60 kg of poppy husk from Sector 21 here today.

According to police sources, someone called the Crime Stoppers Cell at about 2 in the morning and said that someone had alighted from a bus at a stop near the Sector 21 and 22 traffic lights and had thrown some packets in the bushes at the rear of houses. He had then boarded a rickshaw and was seen going towards the the ISBT.

A Quick Reaction Team, an anti-explosive team and the PCR were pressed into action which cordoned off the area. Once the explosive team declared the area safe the abandoned goods, two suitcases and three bags, were checked and it was found that the material was poppy husk.

The entire consignment had been neatly packed into 42 packets of varying weight. The police also recovered two unstitched lady suits, two used gents suits, one toy pistol and a remote bell in one of the bags.

Sources said the consignment could have been brought from Rajasthan as the stitched suits had the tag of a Sikar-based tailor. Further investigations are on.

Two injured: An unidentified scooterist was admitted to the PGI after his vehicle collided with a cyclist at the Press Chowk, Madhya Marg.

Raman Jain of Sector 45 was admitted to the PGI after he was hit by a scooter near the Government School, Nehru Park, Sector 22.

Whisky seized: The police has recovered 100 pouches of whisky from Mauli Jagran resident Om Pal. Similarly, 12 bottles of whisky were recovered from Ashok Kumar, a resident of Sector 25. Cases under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act have been registered.

Cycle theft: The police has arrested Sector 21 resident Biru Thapa on the charge of stealing a bicycle following a compliant by Khajan Ali, a resident of Badheri. The cycle was recovered from him.

A case under Sections 379 and 411, IPC, has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Buffalo stolen: Mr Chandika Parsad, a resident of Colony No 4, reported to the police that his buffalo has been stolen from his house by Nirmal Singh of Parol village. A case under Section 379, IPC, has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Assaulted: Mr Gurbax Singh, a resident of Mani Majra, reported to the police that he was assaulted and injured by Jeet Singh, a resident of the same area. His front teeth had been broken by the accused.

A case under Section 325, IPC, has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.

19 held: As many as 19 persons have been arrested for committing various offences in the city.

Fifteen persons have been arrested under preventive action.

One person has been held for drunken driving.

One person has been held for roaming about under suspicious circumstances.

Two persons, Hari Singh and Rajiv, have been arrested in connection with already registered against them. The former was wanted in an accident case, while the latter had escaped from police custody in the district courts.

Four injured: Four persons were injured when a Tata 407 (HP-07-D-9045) collided with an ambassador car (PB-33-6100) near the nursery roundabout on the road dividing Sectors 16 and 17. A case against the driver of Tata 407 has been registered under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC for rash and negligent driving.

Liquor seized: A case under the Excise Act has been registered against Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Rally, after he was caught on the road dividing Sectors 10 and 11 with 12 bottles of liquor in his scooter (CHJ 1188).

The police recovered 24 bottles of country liquor from Banti Ram, a resident of Raipur Rani. A case has been registered under the Excise Act.

SAS NAGAR

Suicide bid: Satish Sharma, a resident of Phase 2, here tried to burn himself after locking himself in a room in his house this evening. He was, however, saved by the timely intervention by the police and the fire brigade personnel. The youth was reported to be mentally upset.

Challans: As many as 103 persons were challaned for various traffic violations in the township on Monday. One vehicle was impounded.Back

Vegetable prices fluctuate

PANCHKULA, Sept 20 — Prices of most vegetables continued to fluctuate for the third week in a row. These are expected to stabilise only when the vegetables available in summer are completely replaced by the winter vegetables.

A bunch of spinach in the Sector 7 and 8 markets costs Rs 5, while two bunches were available at Rs 8. However, by the next week, its price is likely to go down further with more arrivals in the market. The vegetable is likely to be priced at Rs 2 a bunch, vegetable vendors opine.

The price of a kg of tomato varied from Rs 12 to Rs 16 in different sectors of the city. While a kg of tomato was available at Rs 14 in Sector 8, it could be bought at Rs 15 in Sector 6 and at Rs 16 in the Sector 7 market.

The price of gourd has gone down from Rs 12 per kg to Rs 10 per kg in Sector 8. However, it continues to be available at Rs 12 per kg in Sectors 6, 7 and 9 markets. The price of bittergourd has shown an upward trend. The vegetable is now available at Rs 20 per kg against the past week's price which varied between Rs 20 and Rs 16 per kg. In Sector 6, it was comparatively cheaper at Rs 18 a kg.

Also, brinjal was being sold at Rs 14 per kg in the city markets. It has become dearer by Rs 2 since it could be bought at Rs 12 per kg, last week. The price of cauliflower has fallen from Rs 25 per kg to Rs 20 per kg this week. The price of a kg of capsicum has also gone down from Rs 40 to Rs 30. A kg of cabbage could be bought at Rs 20 in Sector 7 and 8 markets.

A kg of potato, onion, green chilli and lemon is available at Rs 5, Rs 15, Rs 20 and Rs 32, respectively, in most vegetable markets. Back



 


Trials for u-19 cricket team

CHANDIGARH, Sept 20 — The Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association) will conduct trials for players under the age of 19 to select the UT team for the Haryana Inter-District Cricket Tournament. The trials will be held at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, on September 22 at 3.30 pm, according to Mr Surinder Singh, Secretary of the Chandigarh Cricket Association.

Sub-jr volleyball: Sports Training Centre of the SAI in Sector 18, and Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, bagged the girls' and boys' titles respectively in the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Volleyball Championship being played here at SPS-41.

In the final, STC, SAI-18, girls defeated sports complex, Sector 46, while in the boys section, SPS-41 defeated Sports Complex, Sector 7.

Shivalik Trophy: As many as 20 teams from different schools of the city will take part in the annual 'Shivalik Trophy' Inter-school Cricket Tournament to begin here tomorrow at Cricket Stadium in Sector 16. The teams have been divided into four groups of five teams each.

The matches till the quarterfinals stage will be of 25 overs a side, while semi-finals and finals will be of 30 and 35 overs a side, respectively. To be organised by the UT Cricket Association, the final will be played on October 15.

Avinash skipper: Avinash Kumar has been named the skipper of the Mohali Cricket Association's under-19 team which will take part in the Punjab State Inter-district Cricket Tournament for the Dhruv Pandove Trophy. SAS Nagar will play its first match against Chandigarh tomorrow.

The boys were selected from the SAS Nagar Cricket Academy which opened in May, said Mr G.S. Walia, Secretary of the Mohali Cricket Association.

The team is as follows: Avinash Kumar (captain), Kamal Walia, Ravi Kumar, Ankur Sharma, Manoj Kumar, Tej Gobind Singh, Amrinder Singh, Randeep Singh, Harpreet Singh, Harnek Singh, Manpreet Singh, Parminder Singh, Inderjit Singh, Jatinder Narang, H. Singh and Abhijeet Walia.

Mr Sukhminder Tinkoo will be the coach-cum-manager of the team.

Friendship Cup: The BBMB team scored second consecutive victory in the Friendship Cup Cricket Tournament being played here at the PEC in Sector 12. The BBMB employees team defeated the Fujitsu (SAS Nagar) team by 44 runs. Earlier, the BBMB had beaten the PEC team by three wickets.

Brief scores: BBMB XI — 131 runs for 6 wickets in 25 overs (Pawan 52, Baljeet Bawa 32, Amit Kumar 15, Rattan 2 for 32); Fujitsu XI — 87 all out (Sunil 28, Rajesh 16, Amit Kumar 4 for 12, Baljeet Bawa 2 for 12, Sanjeev Guleria 2 for 8).

Cricket teams: St Anne's School, Sector 32, has selected two teams in under-14 and under-16 sections of boys which will take part in the second Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament to be organised by St John's School in October.

The teams are as follows: Under-14 —Gaurav (captain), Angel (vice-captain), Harman, Ankush, Aman, Sunny, Ayush, Rahul, Varun Arora, Akash, Saurabh, Soumanyu, Saurabh Suman, Hemant, Simranjeet.
