FEROZEPORE
Eye camp:
With the assistance of the Ferozepore Cantonment branch of the State Bank of Patiala, a free eye camp will be held at the local Hindu Charitable Hospital from September 23 to 26, according to the bank's Branch Manager, Mr S.S. Gupta. Medicines, spectacles and diet will be provided free of cost to the patients. Cataract operations will also be performed.

Grievances: With a view to hold a discussion on the grievances of the telephone subscribers in the Ferozepore Telecom Division, an open house session will be held in the chamber of the General Manager, Telecommunications, here on September 22 at 11.30 a.m.

GURDASPUR
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Gurdaspur Club: Vice-President — Mr Sanjeev Mittal; Secretary — Mr Satish Kapoor; and Joint Secretary — Mr Sandeep Walia. The Deputy Commissioner is the Ex-Officio President of the club. Mr Balbir Singh Janjua, Mr Dilbag Singh Cheema, Mr Prem Gupta, Mr Vijay Sharma and Mr Ajay Kaushal have been elected as executive members.

Booked: The police on Sunday booked Ramesh Chand, a resident of Khuh Wali gali, Nawan Shahr, and Gurinder Singh, former Sarpanch of Khojepate in Nawan Shehar district, for extorting money from people on the pretext of sending their sons abroad. The accused allegedly collected Rs 1,50,000 each from Mr Jagjit Singh and Mr Boor Singh, and Rs 30,000 from Mr Charan Singh. A case has been registered against the accused.

Land grab case: Roop Singh, Karam Singh, Chanchal Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Sukhwinder Kaur, Jagir Kaur, Amarjit Kaur and Shinda Singh, all residents of Salahpur under Qadian police station, allegedly connived with each other and grabbed the land of Swaran Singh and Mangal Singh. The latter, the owners of the land, had migrated to Lachhipur Kolari in West Bengal long ago and had died in the meantime. A case has been registered against the accused at Kahnuwan police station for grabbing land under forged identities.

MALERKOTLA
Free eye camp:
As many as 55 operations were performed and 500 patients examined by Dr M. S. Bhatia at a free eye camp organised by the local Lions Club at Dharshala Kali Mata Mandir here on Saturday. Medicines were given free of cost to the patients.

Teachers Day function: Mr Jaspal Singh Jassi, SDM, advised teachers to keep up-to-date knowledge for the betterment of students. He was speaking at a Teachers Day function organised by the DAV Senior Secondary School here on Saturday. Teachers of the school were also honoured by the management of the school on the occasion.

Union chief elected: Mr Ajit Singh Chanduraea was re-elected president of the Malerkotla Truck Operators Union defeating his rival candidate Khushi Mohammed with a margin of 536 votes. A total of 1,028 votes were polled out of which two votes were found missing. Tehsildar R.K. Garg was the poll observer.

NAWANSHAHR
Free check-up:
The Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust, Dhahan Kaleran, in collaboration with HelpAge India and Gurdwara Shaheedan Usapur organised a free medical check-up at Guru Nanak Mission Hospital, Urapur, about 15 km from here, on Sunday. Dr Malkeet Singh of Patiala inaugurated the camp in which more than 1,000 patients were examined and 52 eye operations performed. Medicines were provided free of cost to the patients.

PATHANKOT
Centre opened:
A centre of the Punjabi Kalakar Sansthan was opened here on Sunday. A function was held at Gulmohar Tourist Complex which was presided over by the Industry Minister, Punjab.

Challans: Mr Mohinder Singh, SP, said here on Sunday that as many as 154 vehicles were challaned during a drive launched by the district police against the violators of traffic rules.

PATIALA
‘Discriminatory’ attitude flayed:
The Patiala Colonies Welfare Federation has criticised the discriminatory attitude of the Municipal Corporation for ignoring the demands of the general public and fulfilling those of a select few. Mr Avtar Singh Brar, president, and Mr Tarlok Singh, general secretary, of the federation, alleged in a press statement that while municipal officers had turned a deaf ear to many applications of the federation regarding the construction or repair of roads, they had got repaired some patches of roads allegedly at the behest of the VIPs.

Workshop: The State Institute of Education, Sector 32, organised a five-day workshop on the ''Use of musical kits'' for primary teachers of Chandigarh schools from September 15, in which 36 teachers participated. Ms Surinder Kaur, Mr Kuldeep Singh and Mr Darshan Singh were resource persons from different schools who imparted training in playing various musical instruments.

Land demanded: Telehouse, a co-operative group housing society of telecom employees, has asked the UT Administration and the Estate Office, Chandigarh, to allot land to the society as it had deposited 25 per cent of total land cost as initial deposit for the land in 1996. A press note released by the society has asked the Administration to explain how much time more would elapse before the issue was resolved.

Contributed: Students of the Goswami Ganesh Dutt Sanatan Dharam College, Sector 32, accompanied by their Principal, Dr A.C. Vaid, presented a cheque for Rs 46,186 to the Administrator of Chandigarh, Lieut-Gen B.K.N. Chhibber (retd), as their contribution towards the Army Central Welfare Fund, on Monday. The staff members of the college had contributed Rs 53,814 to the fund.

FATEHABAD
Competition results:
The local DAV Centenary Public School organised "mehndi rachao" and salad arrangement competitions in the school on Saturday. In the mehndi competition, Simpi Bajaj, Jyoti Mehta and Rupali bagged the first, second and third positions, respectively. Reena got the consolation prize. In the salad competition, Sahil, Neha and Manas groups bagged the first, second and third positions, respectively.

KURUKSHETRA
Case registered:
The local police has registered a case against Satish Kumar, a resident of Jaisinghpura village, Karnal district, under Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471, IPC, for allegedly forging the signatures of the Kurukshetra University Vice-Chancellor.

SIRSA
Injured:
Makhan Singh, a farmer of Mushibwala village, was seriously injured with sharp-edged weapons allegedly by his brother on Sunday. He was admitted to the local Civil Hospital where his condition was stated to be stable. According to sources, Kartar Singh, father of the injured, had given money, realised from the sale of agricultural land, to his two sons, Gurdeep Singh and Balvinder Singh, which was objected to by Makhan Singh. The sources claimed that the father was also one of the assailants. No arrest has been made so far.

Killed: Veer Bhan (30), Lambardar of Jgoradnali village in the district, succumbed to his injuries at the local Civil Hospital on Sunday. According to sources, Jammu Ram Kamboj was cultivating agricultural land near Dhanoor village. The sources claimed that Arjun Singh Kamboj had allegedly got his name entered in revenue records related to Jammu Ram's land. A clash ensued between Jammu Ram, Arjun Singh, his three sons, and another accused Tilak Raj. Jammu Ram and his son were shot at. Veer Bhan intervened and was seriously injured with sharp-edged weapons by all five accused.

SONEPAT
Unsolved case:
The Government Railway Police (GRP) has failed to make a headway in the kidnapping case of a married woman Nirmala Devi even after investigation lasting about two years. The woman was allegedly kidnapped on February 23, 1997, when she, along with her parents, got down from a train at the Ganaur railway station. She is married to Raj Kumar of Bindrauli village and had allegedly been harassed by her husband and other members of his family for not bringing sufficient dowry.

Talent search show: A talent search show "Chayanika" was organised at Hindu Girls College here on Sunday. A large number of students participated in various competitions like folk songs, folk dance, classical dance, songs, poetic symposium and 'shloka' recitation on the occasion.

Meeting: The district unit of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) organised a workers' meeting here on Sunday to mark the birthday celebrations of a former Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Devi Lal. It was decided at the meeting to send thousands of party workers and supporters to Hisar for taking part in a rally to be held there on September 25 in this connection.

Revenue: The Excise and Taxation Department has taken a series of measures to increase its revenue from sales tax and allied taxes in the district. Mr B.M. Bhargawa, Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner, told mediapersons here on Sunday that the department had earned a revenue of Rs 2,749.50 lakh under the Haryana General Sales Tax Act and another Rs 693.87 lakh under the Central Sales Tax Act during the first five months of the current financial year as compared to Rs 2143.48 lakh and Rs 726.87 lakh, respectively, during the corresponding period in 1998-99. top

Convicted:
Mr J.N. Barowalia, Sessions Judge, convicted Ram Mohammad, alias Raju, of Jaijjo village in Hoshiarpur district under Section 15 of the NDPS Act for possessing poppy husk and sentenced him to undergo imprisonment for 10 years. A fine of Rs 1 lakh was also imposed on him.
