Bathinda, May 4
Two households in Bathinda went into celebratory mode today as the news came in about their children clearing the UPSC interviews. While Dr Navjot Khosa Brar, a dental surgeon, already undergoing training in Jaipur after clearing the Rajasthan Administrative Service exam, 2010, secured the 95th rank in the UPSC 2011, Navdeep Singh Brar, who is an MBBS, secured the 120th rank.
Speaking to TNS, with happiness ringing in his voice, Navdeep, who did his schooling from Kotkapura and MBBS from Amritsar, said, "I was keen on appearing for the UPSC exam during my school days as well. But the determination came while working at a rural medical hospital. Working in a village, I was inspired to work harder for the needy."
Choosing anthropology and Punjabi literature as his subjects, Navdeep dedicated 4-6 hours everyday to his preparations. "I never shut myself up in a room with books. After working from 9 am to 2 pm, I used to study for 4-6 hours daily. While preparing for the exam, I used to take out time to attend marriages and birthday parties as well. I also never attended any coaching class as they ask the students to mug up," he said.
Talking about the rampant corruption in government and administrative sector, he says, "Everyone has two options - the right one and the easy one. I have decided to be the change that I want to see in the system," he said.
Navjot, who chose Punjabi literature and geography as her subjects, said, "Clearing the UPSC was my childhood dream. While doing my internship after graduation, I felt the need to be actively involved in serving society. What could have been better that being an IAS officer?"
Her jubilant father JS Khosa said Navjot studied at the local St Joseph's Convent and the DAV Senior Secondary School. She did her BDS from
Amritsar.
