The schedule for the 14th Lok Sabha elections could be announced this weekend, Election Commission sources said today, adding that the polling would begin by April 17 and be over by May 5.

The Delhi police has launched a massive hunt to trace Sher Singh Rana, alias Shamsher Singh, alias Pankaj, prime accused in the sensational Phoolan Devi murder case, who escaped from the high security Tihar Jail today with help of his accomplices who were posing as policemen of the third battalion of the Delhi Armed Police (DAP).

India, Pak work out time frame for talks

Setting a positive tone on the eve of the Foreign Secretary-level talks, India and Pakistan today reached a “broad understanding” on the time frame and modalities for the resumption of the composite dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir.

Eight Pak nationals repatriated
Wagah (Amritsar), February 17
In keeping with the positive tone of the Indo-Pak talks in Islamabad, eight Pakistani nationals were today repatriated to their country after spending nearly a year in Indian jails. Border Security Force (BSF) Commandant D K Sharma handed over the eight youths to the Pakistani Rangers Head Sher Zaman Khan here this afternoon.

Tehelka probe panel for examination of all defence deals

In the first secret interim report, the Tehelka Commission of Inquiry headed by Mr Justice S N Phukan has suggested that a sitting Supreme Court judge should examine all defence files since Independence, it is learnt.

Gurgaon bandh over murder of powerman

The call for a “bazaar bandh” today in protest against the failure of government to ensure law and order in the wake of murder of an employee of the electricity department evoked good response in old Gurgaon city. The bandh call came from the business community and was supported by all opposition parties like the Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

Inhuman conditions for juvenile offenders

Despite the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Conventions on the Rights of Child, about 30 juvenile offenders in the local observation home have been deprived of all civil and human rights. Living in inhuman conditions, they are treated in a cruel manner.
