The government today modified the
controversial proposal of 0.1 per cent tax on cash withdrawals sparing the
savings accounts holders from the taxman’s scalpel, whittled down the
contentious fringe benefit tax, and raised the tax exemption limit for
women and senior citizens.

admits Amarinder’s plea on wealth tax
New Delhi, May 2
The Supreme Court today admitted a
special leave petition of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh
challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court order holding that
three-fourths of the property of his father, the late Maharaja
Yadavindra Singh of Patiala, was “assessable” to wealth tax under
the Undivided Hindu Family category.
