The experts stated that the disease was first observed in 2022 and was not seen in Punjab in 2023 and 2024. However, this year, the disease has spread rapidly, affecting rice crops in many districts.
The virus causes stunted growth, pointed leaves and shallow roots in affected plants. The height of infected plants remains half or one-third that of the normal plants. In severe cases, the plants may wilt and dry up. The disease can be mistaken for nutrient deficiency, but laboratory testing has confirmed the presence of virus particles in affected crops.
Farmers have been advised to contact their nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra for proper identification and effective management of the disease. Experts can provide guidance on the best course of action and help farmers distinguish between plant stunting and other causes of stunted growth.
Health experts stated that to prevent the spread of the disease, farmers have been recommended to keep ditches and water channels free of weeds, uproot and bury diseased plants at the earliest, and monitor paddy crops regularly for signs of the disease and the white-backed rice locust, which spreads the virus.
