2 die as car overturns on Zirakpur flyover

Zirakpur, December 22

Two persons lost their lives while three others, including two girls, sustained grievous injuries when the car they were travelling in overturned on the Zirakpur flyover in the wee hours of Sunday. The mishap reportedly took place due to speeding and poor visibility owing to dense fog.

The deceased have been identified as Vishal Kohli and Ankit Kalse while those injured are Nisha, Khushi and Manish Joshi, all in their mid-20s and residents of Delhi.

According to the police, the victims were on their way from Delhi to Shimla via Chandigarh when the car driver lost control of the vehicle.

Gurmail Singh, investigating officer (IO), said Ankit Kalse, who was at the wheel, lost control of the vehicle reportedly due to poor visibility on the Zirakpur flyover. The IO said Ankit failed to negotiate a turn and the speeding vehicle hit the median and then a pole on the flyover. On hitting the pole, the vehicle toppled onto the highway.

Passersby informed the police, following which cops rushed to the spot.

Meanwhile, the passersby brought out the car occupants stuck inside the car. The victims were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32, Chandigarh, where Ankit and Vishal were declared brought dead. Manish Joshi was referred to the PGI. The condition of Nisha and Khushi was stated to be critical at the GMCH, said the police.

The police have informed the family members of the victims about the accident.

The IO said acting on the complaint of one of the victims, they have initiated inquest proceedings into the mishap. He added that autopsy would be conducted tomorrow.

Driver fails to negotiate turn
