The operation comes as part of a broader directive from the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat, which had recently ordered a citywide drive to identify and action against illegal immigrants residing in Delhi.
“Teams from local police stations, district foreigner cells and other units conducted door-to-door checks, scrutinised documents and interrogated people suspected of residing without valid documentation,” a senior police officer said.
As per official sources, the verification operations form part of a larger citywide initiative that has already identified over 1,500 suspected illegal immigrants. The police have been coordinating with local authorities in the suspects’ native regions to authenticate their identities.
“Verification efforts go beyond the immediate district boundaries. Teams collaborate with law enforcement in other states to verify the authenticity of documents such as voter IDs and Aadhaar cards,” he added.
