On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut sparked a controversy with an Instagram post. She posted on Instagram that “A country has sons and not a father. Mother India is lucky to have such sons,” while referring to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri as the “son of Bharat Mata”. However, her statement drew sharp criticism from leaders of opposition parties. They said that such statements were aimed at distorting history and undermining the values of non-violence and unity that the Mahatma had championed.

In another message, Kangana said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was taking forward the Mahatma’s legacy regarding cleanliness.
