One held for forging land papers

The district police have registered a case against two persons and arrested one of them for allegedly committing fraud to the tune of crores by preparing fake documents of a resident’s land.

Sanghol police station incharge Kashmiri Lal said Amritpal Singh, a resident of Budhewal village, Ludhiana, had lodged a complaint against the two suspects. Amritpal claimed that he owned 6.5 acres of land in Manderan village, which he had leased to one Maskin Singh of the same village. He said that two people — Jagdish Kumar of Kalheri village and Sukha, a resident of Morinda— prepared fake documents of his land and made an agreement to sell it to a prospective buyer, Gurdeep Singh of Morinda. Amritpal said the deal was finalised at Rs 6 crore and Gurdeep started visiting the land. When Gurdeep sought information from Maskin about the land owner, he was shown a photograph of Jagdev Singh, father of Amritpal. On checking the sale agreement, Gurdeep realised that the documents had been tampered with and a photo had been pasted on them to hide the identity of the real owner.

After uncovering the truth, Gurdeep, Amritpal and Maskin called the suspects, Jagdish and Sukha, to a dhaba on the pretext of fixing a date for the registry of land sale. When the two suspects reached the spot, the trio informed the police. The police arrested Jagdish but Sukha managed to flee.

The police presented the suspect in court and got him on two-day remand. The police are conducting raids to nab his accomplice. SHO Kashmiri Lal said that they are in the process of ascertaining how the suspects forged the documents, and if they had duped other people in this manner.
