Vir Das’ Hasmukh in trouble for allegedly maligning lawyersFacing the heat
Actor-comic Vir Das’ new web series Hasmukh, which he has produced and acted in, has the audience hooked. Interestingly, it is one of the top-running series on Netflix India. The story follows its unlikely hero, Hasmukh Sudiya, who hails from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. After working for years as an apprentice for a local stand-up comic, where he is reduced to doing the chores of fetching pakodas and ironing costumes, he decides to take matters in his own hands. However, in a fit of unexpected rage, he ends up killing his mentor.
Now, a compliant has been filed against this series for allegedly maligning the image and reputation of lawyers. The plea moved by advocate Ashutosh Dubey alleges that in episode four of the web series, lawyers have been referred to as thieves, scoundrels, goons and rapists. The suit seeks directions to the producers, directors and writer of the web series to tender an unconditional apology online for maligning the image of the lawyers’ community, which includes judges too. It also seeks deletion or removal of the statements and content from Hasmukh, especially from episode four.
