Hosts Pakistan demolished Nepal in the opening game of the Asia Cup 2023. Batting first, the Men in Green struggled in the initial phase, but skipper Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed played some brilliant cricket to rescue Pakistan. Babar, who is in incredible form at the moment, hit his 19th ODI century while Iftikhar registered his first as their partnership of 214 runs became the third-highest in the history of the competition.
Courtesy of their incredible batting, Pakistan posted 342 runs in the first innings. All-rounder Sompal Kami picked up two wickets towards the fag end of the first innings, otherwise, the home team could have posted over 350 runs. Nevertheless, the total proved more than enough as Pakistan won the match by 238 runs and moved an inch closer to the Super 4.

When it came to the chase, Shaheen Shah Afridi’s double whammy in the very first over shook Nepal. Kushal Bhurtal hit two boundaries in the opening two balls of the over, but on the fifth delivery, he failed to make a proper connection as Mohammad Rizwan picked up a brilliant catch. In the very next ball, skipper Rohit Paudel failed to connect as the umpire gave him out after an LBW appeal. Soon after that, Aasif Sheikh departed after failing to make a valuable contribution.
Following which, Aarif Sheikh and Sompal Kami tried to build a partnership, but not for long. Babar Azam introduced spinners, and they cleaned Nepal’s remaining batters. Shadab Khan picked up four wickets, while Mohammad Nawaz picked up one. Haris Rauf, too picked up two wickets and hence, the bowlers had a terrific day in the middle, with all five among wickets.
Next, Pakistan will travel to Sri Lanka to take on India. Ahead of taking on their arch-rivals, the win will surely boost their confidence. Meanwhile, courtesy of hitting 151 runs, Babar Azam has been adjudged as Player of the Match.
