The IPL 2023 witnessed its first finalist of the season as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) triumphed over defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) to seal a berth in the summit clash. The MS Dhoni-led side won by 15 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, May 23.
Skipper of the Titans, Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to field first. Chennai’s opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway got off to a slow start as they registered 49 runs in the powerplay (first six overs).
However, Gaikwad took the onus on himself to help get the vital runs and struck a half-century off 36 balls. The pair raised an 87-run stand to keep the yellow outfit steady in the contest. However, seasoned pacer Mohit Sharma drew curtains on Gaikwad’s innings for 60 off 44 balls which included seven fours and one six.
However, that seemed to be the only highlight in Chennai’s innings, as they concluded with a score of 172 runs in their stipulated 20 overs. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma got two wickets each, whereas Darshan Nalkande, Rashid Khan, and Noor Ahmad got one apiece.
Chennai dominate during chase
In response, Gujarat lost the early wicket of veteran batter Wriddhiman Saha for 12 runs during the chase. Soon after, CSK took control of the innings as they got the breakthroughs at regular intervals to leave Gujarat reeling.
However, flamboyant opener Shubman Gill kept the scoreboard ticking as he got big runs on several occasions. The batter scored 42 runs off 38 balls, and in doing so, he etched his name in history as he became the youngest cricketer to score 700-plus runs in a single season of the IPL.
His innings included four fours and one six before he was dismissed by Deepak Chahar. Following his dismissal, the Titans were reduced to 88/5 and needed someone down the middle order to explode. Though Rashid Khan put his best foot forward and scored a blazing knock of 30 off 16 balls featuring two sixes and three fours, the Titans eventually succumbed under pressure.
