13-year-old dies in firing by bike-borne persons during football match in Mehta

The rural police have yet to make any breakthrough in firing incident in which a 13-year-old boy died while an Army man was injured during the closing ceremony of a football match at Khabbe Rajputa village in Mehta yesterday.

The boy, identified as Gursewak Singh, alias Sabu, of Nangali Kalan village died on way to hospital. Injured Army man Gurpreet Singh (25) of Khabbe Rajputa village, was admitted to a hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred when award ceremony was going on at the village ground. Gursewak was member of Nangali Kalan village football team. He was participating in the tournament. He was standing near Gurpreet, who played as goalkeeper in the tournament, when two unidentified bike-borne persons sprinkled bullets at them. A bullet hit Gursewak in his stomach damaging his vital organs thereby leading to his death. The assailants fired four gunshots and fled from the spot.

People rushed both the victims to a hospital where doctors declared Gursewak brought dead. Victim’s father Dalbir Singh said his son was participating in the football tournament at Khabbe Rajputa village. He was having his pictures clicked when two bike-borne persons arrived on the spot. The bike driver had covered his face, while pillion rider fired at Gurpreet. A bullet hit in stomach of my son, he said. He was taken to Baba Bakala hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Gursewak was only son of the family. He is survived by his parents and three sisters.

Maninder Singh, SSP, Amritsar (Rural), said, “The police are working on different theories and motive behind the incident, including alleged illicit relationship. The assailants will be arrested soon.”
