2 Nihangs held in murder case

The city police have arrested two Nihangs in connection with the murder of a man identified as Lovepreet Singh outside Mohini Park locality near Khalsa College here four days ago. Those arrested were identified as Surinder Singh, alias Luv (25), of Mattewal, now residing at Nava Pind on the Mehta road, and Kuldeep Singh of Mohalla Baba Jeevan Singh (32) at Mattewal village. Kuldeep was at present living in quarters located on backside of the UT market.

Baljinder Kaur, wife of deceased, stated to the police that Lovepreet and his friend Jaspal Singh had gone to market in a car (bearing registration number Punjab-02-BN-0396) on March 5. She said a few minutes later, Jaspal called her and said some unknown Nihangs had attacked Lovepreet with sharp weapons after an argument. Baljinder said she reached the spot and found several Nihangs attacking her husband and damaging their car. Lovepreet sustained serious sharp weapon injuries. The accused fled on their vehicle from the spot after the incident. Lovepreet was taken to a hospital where doctors declared brought dead on arrival.

Vishaljit Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), said during probe it was found that Lovepreet was also a Nihang. He said the incident occurred after vehicles of both the parties collided with each other. Heated arguments between the victim and Nihangs soon took an ugly turn when the latter attacked him with swords and sharp weapons leaving him critically wounded, the ADCP said.
