The accident occurred around 1.30 am, when the car reportedly being driven at very high speed, went out of control and smashed into the pillar with immense force. The police from nearby Mahal police post reached the spot and took the bodies into custody. One youth fell outside the car, while the other two were taken out with difficulty after removing the car doors.
According to relatives present at the site, the victims — Jaskaran Singh (21) and Diljaan Singh (23) of Chak Mishri Khan village, Jobanjeet Singh (32) of Lopoke and Avtar Singh (28) of Boparai Baaj village — were returning to Amritsar from Lopoke in a friend’s Verna car.
Diljaan was driving the vehicle. He was also seriously injured in the incident. According to the police, he was out of danger now.
The impact was so severe that the engine reportedly was found nearly 10 feet away. Some passersby after seeing the victims trapped inside the mangled car, stopped their vehicles and began rescue efforts. With the help of police, all four youths were pulled out after nearly half an hour of struggle.
By then, Jaskaran, Jobanjeet and Avtar had succumbed to their injuries. Diljaan was found breathing and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
