In a meeting with officials of the district administration, Manju Diler, member, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, has asked them to ensure the safety of the sanitation workers.

She said the commission was committed to solving the problems of the safai karamcharis and save them from exploitation and health hazards. She asked the officials to ensure that the cleaning of sewers was done only with machines.

She said in case safai karamcharis were required to enter a manhole then it was the responsibility of the administration to ensure that proper safety measures were taken.

She asked the administration to ensure that all payments of the safai karamcharis were made online and they were provided proper medical services. The national commission member said it was the duty of the administration to ensure the availability of gloves, face masks, uniforms and the workers were medically examined twice a year.

On the issue of giving jobs on compassionate grounds to dependents of deceased safai karmacharis, she asked the administration to ensure that they were given jobs as per their educational qualifications.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Surinder Singh, Civil Surgeon Dr Anup Kumar, Executive officer of municipal council Sharanjit Kaur, District Welfare Officer Bikramjit Singh and other officials were present in the meeting.
