After decades, Gurdaspur parks to get new look

After decades of lying in a state of misuse, the city’s main parks will now be getting a new look as the municipal committee (MC) has decided to revamp them to make them more user-friendly for local residents.

Baljeet Singh Pahra, president of the Gurdaspur municipal committee, said funds will not prove to be a hindrance in renovating all the four main parks of the city. They are Shaheedi Park, Shaheed Balwinder Singh Park, also known as the fish park, and the parks of Improvement Trust scheme Nos. 5 and 7.

“I approached Member Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and told him about the plight of the parks. He immediately gave a grant of Rs 12 lakh from his MPLAD funds. The rest of the money will be taken out from the municipal committee funds. Tenders are in the process of being floated and we hope to complete the work within a month,” said Pahra.

He said all roads falling under the jurisdiction of the municipal committee will be re-carpeted. “Patchwork on the roads has already been started. A sum of Rs 24 lakh has been earmarked for the project,” said the MC chief.

He said the garbage processing site at Nabipur village had been cleared and Rs 1.21 crore will be spent on installing equipment at the site.
