The officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj has called upon the governments of India and Pakistan to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor soon.

The Kartarpur Corridor at Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district was closed down for pilgrims to visit the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Narowal (Pakistan) on May 7 by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ Bureau of Immigration ‘till further orders’, following the air strikes carried out by the Indian military under ‘Operation Sindoor’.

On the other hand, the Pakistan authorities had maintained that the Kartarpur Corridor would remain open on their end as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

Giani Gargaj believed that the tension between India and Pakistan had died down after the ceasefire and that the atmosphere was more peaceful now, it was not justified to put restrictions on Kartarpur Corridor.

“As the situation has normalised, the operations of Kartarpur Corridor should be resumed. Reopening it would further contribute to maintaining peace and harmony and strengthening mutual ties between the two neighbouring nations,” he said.

Giani Gargaj also stated that both nations — and the region as a whole — were in greater need of peace, progress, mutual love, and cooperation, rather than tension and conflict. He praised those national and international leaders who have played a wise and compassionate role in defusing war-like situations and promoting calm.
