Local gatka player Kushaldeep Singh has brought glad tidings to the city by clinching a gold medal in the Khelo India Youth Games held recently in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai. He received a rousing welcome at the Amritsar railway station last night upon his return. He had made the cut for the meet by securing a position in the Open National Championship organised by the Gatka Federation of India in Assam in 2022.

Now, the feisty gatka player is set to prove his mettle in the National School Games, which will be held in Chhattisgarh’s Durg from February 4 to 7.

A Class XI student of Khalsa College Senior Secondary School, his tryst with gatka began over six years ago. It is safe to say that he is taking after his father, Manvinder Singh, who is a gatka coach by profession.
