Amritsar Mayor, AAP workers protest Agnipath scheme, demands rollback

Amritsar, June 30

Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and several Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors staged demonstration against the Central Government’s “Short term employment policy – Agnipath Yojana” at Gwal Mandi Chowk and burnt an effigy of the Prime Minister and the ruling dispensation today.

Rintu said, “The BJP government at the Centre has been playing with emotions of the youth of the country with Agnipath scheme. At present, 65 per cent population of the country is youth. The announcement of this scheme has brought disgrace to the youth. The name of this scheme itself shows “the path of fire”. The Central Government is running on the same lines.”

He said the youth would have no employment after serving in the Army for four years. They would become criminals or gangsters. Mayor Rintu said, “The AAP stands with youth of the country. Till the Central Government does not withdraw this scheme, our party will continue protest across country.”

In Amritsar, the AAP would continue protest against the scheme, he added. Councillors Pramod Babla, Shiv Dhillon, Sanjeev Tangri, Jagdish Kalia, Virat Devgan, Sukhbir Soni, Sanjeev Gulati, Dimple Arora, AAP volunteers and others were present on the occasion.
