Army jawan nabbed for spying
Amritsar Rural Police have arrested an Army jawan for allegedly leaking confidential information to Pakistan-based intelligence agencies.
The accused has been identified as Sandeep Singh, a resident of Sardoolgarh. Currently posted at Nasik Army camp, he was arrested from Patiala.
Sandeep had come on leave.
This is the second arrest made in the past three days.
Earlier, the police have arrested Amritpal Singh, a resident of Chamba Kalan village in Chohla Sahib in Tarn Taran. He was a part of the syndicate involved in spying and cross border drug peddling. The police had also booked another Army jawan Rajbir Singh in the case. Police teams had been despatched to arrest him.
Sandeep was arrested following the interrogation of Amritpal Singh. The police have seized three mobile phones which has been sent for forensic examination.
As per police officials, the accused shared vital information, such as army movements, ammunition details, location of different Army units with Pakistan-based ISI. The racket had been operating for the past two years.
Besides Amritpal, the police had arrested Mandeep Singh alias Maddy and Madhav Sharma of Rajasthan.
The police had recovered 500gm heroin along with Rs 10 lakh drug money, a cash counting machine apart from a .30 bore pistol from their possession. It had also impounded the car they were travelling in.
SSP Amritsar Rural Charanjit Singh Sohal said that the police officials informed the Army authorities about the involvement of Amritpal, Sandeep and Rajbir in transferring vital details with Pakistan’s ISI and in the cross border drug smuggling.
Sandeep would be produced in the court and brought on police remand for further probe, the officials said.
