The objective was to enable them to become responsible citizens who could contribute meaningfully across various sections of society, including the Armed Forces.
In 1949, the Girls Division of the NCC was introduced to provide girls with an equal opportunity to participate. Subsequently, to give the NCC a Tri-Services character, the Air Wing was added in 1950, followed by the Naval Wing in 1952.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru took keen interest in the foundation and growth of the NCC. It was on his directions that community development programmes and social service activities were incorporated into the NCC’s scope.
Over the years, especially during the wars India has fought, NCC cadets have served like a second line of defence, playing an important role in the security of rear areas. They worked with the civil administration, actively participated in rescue operations and assisted in traffic management. In addition, during natural calamities, NCC cadets have consistently been at the forefront to provide relief and humanitarian aid.
During Operation Sindoor, NCC cadets once again proved their mettle by providing crucial support to the people, who were affected by Pakistan’s shelling in Jammu and Kashmir. They played a vital role in providing logistical support, evacuating civilians, serving food and donating blood for the injured.
Schools must establish both Junior and Senior Divisions of the NCC, affiliated with their respective local or regional NCC battalions. This structure provides students with a unique opportunity to join the NCC in Class VII and continue through to Class XII.
Students gain exposure to military-like discipline, drill, physical training, adventure camps and small arms firing, which help them build self-confidence and the ability to overcome challenges. In today’s world, where the younger generation is busy with clocking long hours on the mobiles, the NCC serves as a meaningful alternative that promotes physical activity and social engagement.
NCC alumni have gone on to achieve prominence in politics, the executive and the military. Perhaps it is the training, discipline and environment provided by the NCC at a formative stage that shapes their character and lays a solid foundation for success. This bedrock of strong values is imperative to succeed in any field and overcome the challenges that the rigmarole of life has to offer.
