The Zoology and Botany departments of DAV College organised a two-day hands-on training workshop for a group of 13 students of BSc Semester V (medical, non-medical and biotechnology). The workshop was organised under the Star College Scheme of the Department of Biotechnology.

Dr Pratap Kumar Sati, Head of the Department of Biotechnology of Guru Nanak Dev University, conducted the workshop. He trained the students in making synthetic seeds. Students were also shown the central instrumentation facility of the department and explained the working of gene gun, inverted microscope, different versions of PCR, deep freezers (-80 and -20 degrees Celsius), gel doc and transgenic plants such as tobacco and salo. Students were also given training in agro-bacterium transformation. They were taken to the Department of Emerging Sciences, where they were explained the working of 400 and 500 MHz NMR, different versions of HPLC, mass detector, 2D chromatography, sonicator, gene sequencers, etc.

Principal Dr Rajesh Kumar appreciated the departments for organising the workshop and also motivated students to participate in such skill-enhancing activities. — TNS
