‘Collect only segregated waste from homes’

On the recommendations of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), from now onwards, the workers of the solid waste management firm will collect only segregated waste from homes in the city.

The MC health officials said this time, the segregation of garbage was the main component in Swachh Survekshan-2022, which is a nationwide cleanliness survey. The segregation of garbage at the source level is a must in every household to improve the city rank in the cleanliness survey.

Last time, the ranking of the city had suffered due to poor arrangement for garbage segregation. Only a small section of society adopted segregation of garbage at the source level. MC was also not prepared for this as vehicles of the solid waste management company were also ill-equipped for the segregation of waste. In a recent meeting with solid waste management company AVERDA, MC Joint Commissioner Hardeep Singh asked the company officials to install partition in all vehicles deployed for garbage collection.

The MC has also been trying to streamline garbage collection by assuring the regular collection of garbage. At present, the SWM firm was collecting garbage twice a week in most of the localities.

In a recent meeting with the MC health staff, the Deputy Commissioner-cum-MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh Sudan asked MC officials to educate the masses about the segregation of garbage at the household level.

According to the MC health officials, around 60 per cent of residents segregate garbage at the source and they were making efforts to enhance this up to 100 per cent.

A separate space would be allocated for hazardous waste at Bhagtanwala dumping ground as well. Garbage collection boxes in the city will also be kept separately for different types of waste, the MC health officials said.
