Thousands of commuters are facing traffic snarls almost every day on the Canal Road stretch from Tara Wala Pul to Tarn Taran Road due to the ongoing construction work on a bridge near Sultanwind village. With no alternative routes available, residents of several localities along the Canal Road stretch are forced to endure long delays during their daily travel.

for weeks.

Local residents believe that the company constructing the bridge should have planned suitable diversions to keep traffic moving smoothly. “There should be proper alternate routes for vehicles until the construction work is completed,” said Aakash, a commuter.

The problem is particularly acute for those who are forced to cross the stretch daily for work, school or business. With vehicles moving at a snail’s pace, precious time is lost, adding to commuters’ frustration. Public transport services, including buses and auto-rickshaws, are also getting stuck, affecting schedules. Some residents have suggested immediate deployment of traffic police at key points during peak hours.

“If authorities concerned deploy traffic personnel in the morning and evening hours, vehicular traffic can be better regulated,” said Ravi Marwaha, a resident. Others have urged for temporary traffic signals and signage to guide drivers through congested areas.

Sarabjit Singh, a local resident, criticised the authorities for the slow pace of construction work, alleging that the project is dragging on without urgency. “The work should be expedited so that the bridge is completed at the earliest and people can get relief,” he said.
