Gurkirat Singh (26), a constable attached with the 9 Battalion was found dead in his car parked outside the battalion headquarters under mysterious circumstances here on Monday. The deceased had a bullet injury in his head.

Sheetal Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, said that though the reason behind his death was yet to the ascertained, but as per preliminary probe it appears to be an accidental death. He said he was taking out his pistol which accidentally went off and the bullet hit his head.

He said the body would be handed over to the family members after a post-mortem examination.

Gurkirat had been deputed for the law and order duty at Pathankot during Amarnath Yatra.
