A notorious criminal identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, a resident of Kotli Surat Malli, Gurdaspur, was arrested by the city police after he tried to run over cops with his car on the Batala road here yesterday. He was chased and arrested by police teams.

A fresh FIR of attempt to murder and assaulting policemen while discharging duties was registered at the Mohkampura police station here in this regard.

According to the police, Gopi had links with notorious gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Harry Chatha. He had 12 cases of the NDPS and the Arms Acts and robbery registered against him. Majority of cases were registered in Batala. He was declared a proclaimed offender in one case while in the remaining, he was out on bail.

Navjot Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), investigation, said the police got a tip-off that Gurpreet Singh was coming in a black coloured car from the Celebration Mall side. A police team led by Rajinder Singh, SHO, Mohkampura police station, laid a naka and tried to intercept him. However, he broke the barricade, rammed his car into a police vehicle and fled from the spot. Police teams chased Gurpreet and arrested him near Preet Nagar locality.

The ADCP said Gopi was produced in a court and brought on two-day police remand for further interrogation. His links with different gangsters were being investigated, he said.
