Sharp differences among the rank and file of the district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to the fore here today when local leaders of the party organised two separate functions on the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution.

The group led by district president Harjit Singh Sandhu organised a function at the local Palika Bazaar while a parallel group held its separate programme under the leadership of Amandeep Singh alias Rocky Burj on the Jandiala Guru bypass here. Most senior leaders of the party attended the function led by Rocky Burj. The leaders refrained from making any objectionable statement against the rival group.

Harjit Singh Sandhu said that the party had called to organise a function on the occasion of Nirvan Divas and anybody was free to hold such functions. It is pertinent to note that both the functions were organised in Tarn Taran town.

The Congress party too held a function at the local Bhawan in which the party workers were addressed by Harminder Singh Gill, district president and former MLA. Harminder Singh Gill highlighted the contribution of Dr Ambedkar for protecting the rights of weaker sections of society.

In another function organised by the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI), Pargat Singh Jamarai, state general secretary, called upon weaker sections to be aware of the intentions of communal forces to divide people on religious ground. Other leaders of the party also addressed
