Free medical camp for Central Jail’s women inmates

The FICCI FLO city chapter, in collaboration with the National Rural Health Mission, organised a free medical camp for women inmates at the Amritsar Central Jail. Dr Simarpreet Kaur Sandhu, Chairperson of the FICCI FLO city chapter, explained the camp aimed to raise awareness about the importance of health, hygiene and overall wellness among the women prisoners.

Dr Sonali Devgan, CEO of ESS NGO, organised a session on menstrual health, addressing common myths and promoting the proper use of reusable and disposable menstrual hygiene products. Dr Sandhu also introduced the Pushpa Punya project, initiated by Dr Rajan Sharma, which focuses on converting floral waste into incense sticks. The aim was to involve the women inmates in the production of these incense sticks, providing them with an opportunity for employment.

Dr Sandhu said FLO had been working alongside various stakeholders to carry out health and cancer awareness initiatives. In line with these efforts, the district administration, in partnership with the FICCI FLO city chapter, had organised a cancer awareness, early detection and free health check-up camp on World Cancer Day at Government Senior Secondary School, Bal Kalan.

The camp was a joint initiative involving the World Cancer Care Charitable Society, the Punjab Government, the National Rural Health Mission and private partners, aimed at spreading awareness about cancer prevention and the importance of early detection.

This camp was organised in memory of Dr Hardas Singh Sandhu, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and cancer crusader from Amritsar, who played a significant role in the fight against cancer. Dr Simarpreet Kaur Sandhu, Chairperson of FLO Amritsar, emphasised the importance of collective efforts to fight cancer and promote a healthy lifestyle. She stated, “We have been focused on addressing healthcare challenges, particularly for rural populations. It is crucial to address the needs of underserved areas with sustained healthcare interventions.”

The camp underscored the continued commitment to improving healthcare access and awareness for women, particularly those in rural and underserved communities.
