Expressing disappointment over the government’s apathy, Jathedar Gargaj criticised the Punjab government for failing to illuminate the Summer Palace during Diwali celebrations. He pointed out that while the clubs and liquor outlets situated within Ram Bagh were brightly lit, the palace of the great Sikh ruler remained shrouded in complete darkness.
“It is painful to see that when the entire Amritsar city glows with lights on the eve of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas, but the very palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh lies in darkness,” said Jathedar Gargaj. “This clearly shows that the government, despite claiming to honour the Maharaja, has no genuine regard for Sikh heritage or sentiments.” He added that the Ram Bagh garden, which is managed by the Punjab government, should have been a centre of attraction on such an auspicious occasion. Instead, its condition exposes the indifference of those in power. “Governments should not assume that the Sikh community is indifferent to such matters,” he cautioned.
Appealing to the Sikh community, Jathedar Gargaj urged that irrespective of government involvement, Sikhs themselves should ensure that the Summer Palace and other heritage sites linked to Sikh history are illuminated and respected during Gurpurabs and festivals. He also called upon the residents of Punjab, especially Amritsar, to become more aware and sensitive towards preserving their rich heritage and cultural landmarks.
