An undertrial, identified as Pawandeep Singh (24), lodged in Central Jail, Goindwal Sahib, committed suicide by hanging himself in the bathroom of the jail on Tuesday evening.

Police sources said that the deceased, a resident of Loharka Road, Gumtala, Amritsar, was lodged in a case of attempt to murder in Central Jail, Amritsar, and was shifted to Goindwal Sahib Jail on Tuesday only.

He was declared a proclaimed offender after remaining absent from court proceedings and sent to jail. He was produced in court a few days ago. Mangal Singh, father of the deceased, said that Pawandeep Singh was a daily worker and was from a poor family background.

The Goindwal Sahib Central Jail doctors examined Pawandeep and declared him dead. The postmortem of the body was done at the local Civil Hospital today and handed over to the family for performing the last rites.
