The government of the province of Alberta, Canada, has nominated Amanjot Singh Pannu, a prominent Punjabi Canadian and media professional, as a senator of the University of Calgary.

The university is eighth largest in Canada and the nomination has been made by the Minister for Technical Education of Alberta, Rajan Sawhney. Pannu’s tenure began on July 1 for a period of three years. Of the total 62 different members, Pannu is the second turban-wearing and third senator of Punjabi origin in the University of Calgary senate.

Pannu is currently the Director of Operations of Canada’s Shadow Minister of Finance Jasraj Singh Halan. He has also been working in Calgary’s Punjabi media sector and is a popular name in the Canadian-Punjabi community. His background is from village Sarfkot in Tehsil Dera Baba Nanak of Gurdaspur district.

In response to his nomination, Pannu said he will emphasise on establishing better coordination of the university with the local community, and focus on representing the public interests of Calgary by coordinating with the universities of Punjab. The University of Calgary has about 36,000 students studying in it.
