The event, titled ‘Land, Forest, Conscience and People’s Rights under Attack: How to Resist’, will bring together activists, academics and cultural workers to deliberate on the contemporary challenges faced by democratic rights movements in the country.
Prominent speakers at the gathering include Vrinda Grover, noted advocate from Delhi and a well-known voice for democratic struggles, and Atul Sood, social scientist and professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The programme will also feature cultural performances with music and theatre by Keval Dhaliwal’s Manch Rangmanch group, continuing the legacy of Gurusharan Singh.
The event will be held at Virsa Vihar, Amritsar, from 11am to 2pm. Organisers said it will serve both as a tribute to Gurusharan Singh’s lifelong commitment to people’s rights and as a platform to reflect on strategies of resistance in the face of growing threats to land, forest and democratic values.
Gurusharan Singh, who passed away in 2011, is remembered as a pioneering voice of protest theatre and people’s movements in Punjab and across India.
