The food wing of the district Health Department collected samples of vegetables from farms around the city. The team has collected seven samples of carrot, fenugreek, spinach, potato, Okra, Brinjal and Radish.

District Health Officer Dr Charanjit Singh said: “Usually we collect samples of manufactured foods and it was rare that samples of vegetables were collected.” He said the samples have been collected after instructions from the Director of Mission Tandrust Punjab, Kahan Singh Pannu.

“These are purely non-legal samples and any outcome whatsoever will not make farmers liable for any action,” he said, adding that the purpose was to study the mineral content in various villages of the area. He added that apart from manufactured foods, the vegetables constituted a big portion of the human diet and the department was trying to improve quality. “The agriculture department, too, is working in the direction of production of safe foods in farms,” he said.
