The promise of the Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) to give a facelift to Nehru Shopping Complex on Lawrence Road is yet to be fulfilled. During past few months, the AIT authorities replaced drain pipes alongside the complex as iron pipes had got damaged.
While carrying out repair work, old drainage points were demolished by workers. Ironically, debris after carrying out repairs are still lying in corridors of Nehru Shopping Complex. Construction workers filled debris in sacks. Sanitation workers have started dumping waste on these sacks.
Shopkeepers and visitors, who were already upset over heaps of garbage in main parking of the market, are riled over derbies in lying in corridors. “The AIT chairman had assured to give a facelift to Nehru Shopping Complex. Contrary to assurance, market corridors are getting filthy with each passing day. Heaps of debris and garbage are lying here. The AIT has failed to make arrangements for the proper lifting of garbage from the shopping complex. Traders are at receiving end due to unhygienic conditions,” said Ravi Kumar, a trader.
“Almost all prominent markets in the city are facing sanitation issue. Recently, the municipal corporation established a construction and demolition processing plant for processing debris. Officials of the AIT should use the MC’s plant to process debris. The Trust should also make arrangements to lift garbage every day from the complex and get rid of stray dogs,” said Pawan Kumar, a worker in the market.
