Talking to media here on Wednesday, Dr Avinash Srivastava, Senior Director (Urology & renal transplant) said the hospital has started registering patients for cadaveric kidney transplant.

“Over 2.2 lakh new patients develop chronic kidney failure (CKF) in India every year and only 6,000 manage to get transplant for want of organ donations,” he said. Dr Srivastava added that kidney failure is the sixth fastest growing cause of death, which may become even more prevalent within the next decade.

High blood pressure, diabetes, BPH, untreated kidney stones and UTI are the main reasons for kidney failure in India, he said.

Dr Paras Saini, Consultant (Urology & renal transplant), said, “Only 0.01 per cent of people in India donate organs after death. This is an incredibly small and insignificant number compared to the statistics around the world.” He added that there is a need to create awareness about donating organs to save lives.
