A 46-year-old jail inmate, Gurdit Singh, passed away at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar after being transferred from Amritsar Central Jail. His family alleges that he was brutally beaten up in the hospital and is demanding a thorough investigation into his death.

However, the jail authorities claim that Gurdit was already struggling with severe health issues when he was admitted to the jail two weeks ago. His legs were swollen due to a botched surgery, and he remained hospitalised within the jail premises.

Gurdit’s relative, Rupinder Kaur, revealed that he was bedridden for one-and-a-half years following a road accident and was unable to walk. Despite his condition, police from the proclaimed offender wing took him away from his home and sent him to jail.

Rupinder alleged that Gurdit called from the hospital, stating that he was beaten up. The family has now demanded an inquiry into the matter.
