Jewellers are upbeat at the impressive sale of gold ornaments and articles made of silver seen on the occasion of Dhanteras, which was celebrated here on Tuesday. They expect the surge in gold sales will continue on Wednesday as many people consider it auspicious to buy gold and silver.

Pankaj Khurrana, a leading jeweler, said any attempt to quote the quantum of sale recorded on Dhanteras would remain only a guess. However, we could safely say that the sale of gold was over Rs 100 crore yesterday. “There was no dearth of customers and the majority of them preferred to buy light weight jewellery, including necklaces, bracelets, bangles, kitty sets, etc.”

Vijay Mehta, president of the Civil Lines Jewellers’ Association, said in anticipation of gold reaching the Rs 1 lakh per ‘tola’ (10 gm) mark in near future, customers in large numbers thronged jewellery shops to buy gold ornaments. “There was an amazing surge in the price of yellow metal this year, which was selling around Rs 60,000 per tola in March and reached 80,800 per tola (pure gold) yesterday morning,” he said.

He added that as the price of silver has been soaring for the last few years, people are losing no opportunity to buy silver wares as showpieces, coins, idols of deities, etc.
