An annual conference on gastroenterology by GI Rendezvous, an association of gastroenterologists, was held here on Sunday. Experts from across the country shared their views on prevention of diseases by lifestyle modifications as well as certain interventions, such as surgical or medical, to help those patients whose own efforts had failed to curb the disease.

PGIMER Chandigarh former Director Dr YK Chawla shared with the audience the ideas on how to improve nutrition in liver patients whereas Dr Sonal Asthana, a liver transplant surgeon from Bangalore, spoke about dealing with liver and biliary injuries after routine gall bladder surgeries.

Dr Ajay Kumar, a renowned gastroenterologist from Delhi and President SGEI (Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India), highlighted points to prevent pancreatic diseases and stressed judicious use of antibiotics.

Dr Malay Sharma shared his views about how obesity in certain patients should be managed in case of patients where lifestyle changes fail. He discussed endoscopic interventions for the same.

Dr Rajesh Puri from Delhi shared his experience in the field of endoscopic ultrasound which he stated was a great modality for early and easy diagnosis of cancers and other diseases. Dr Kalyan Kar from Kolkatta discussed diseases of large bowel and new treatments for piles.

GI Rendezvous’ health partners, Team Sarvhit comprising Dr Amitabh Jerath, Dr Jagtesh Sidhu, Dr Ravinder Singh Malhotra, Dr Vikas Gupta and Dr Gurbilas P Singh were also present. — TNS
