The Safai Mazdoor Union of the Amritsar Municipal Corporation on Friday threatened to launch an agitation and stop garbage lifting if the police authorities failed to register a case under the SC/ST Act against a local resident who had allegedly physically assaulted a fourth-class woman employee on Tuesday.

Though the police have registered an FIR for outraging the modesty of a woman and using criminal force for deterring a public servant from discharging her duty, the union expressed their dissatisfaction and demanded immediate arrest of the suspect.

The police have booked Vishal Kumar, a resident of Tilak Nagar area, for allegedly assaulting the victim who was cleaning roads in the locality. The victim told the police that the accused asked her to clean the area in front of his house even though she had already cleaned that part.

She alleged when she replied that she had cleaned the road, the accused got infuriated and entered into a quarrel with her. He used derogatory remarks against her caste and even slapped her face.

Sunil Kumar Khosla, president, Safari Mazdoor Union, said they would stop lifting garbage from Monday if the authorities failed to add sections of the SC/ST Act in the FIR and immediately arrest the accused.
