The Amritsar Municipal Corporation has launched a Geographic Information System (GIS) survey to digitally map all properties in the city-including residential and commercial buildings, shops, factories, etc.
Providing details, Municipal Commissioner Bikramjeet Singh Shergill said that the initiative is part of the Punjab Municipal Services Improvement Project being run by the government, under which several projects are being carried out to provide better facilities to city residents.

As part of this effort, the GIS survey has been initiated to create a digital map of all city properties. He added that a similar survey was conducted earlier in 2013-14, during which approximately 3.58 lakh properties were digitally mapped.
Now, the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC) has awarded the GIS survey contract to Cyber Swift, a Kolkata-based company. The company is expected to complete the door-to-door survey of about 4 lakh properties within six months.
Taking into consideration the geographical challenges of the walled city, the Municipal Commissioner informed that LiDAR-based drone survey will be used for accurate 3D mapping of properties in narrow streets. Drone-based 3D mapping will also be carried out in other parts of the city.

After the survey is completed, the Municipal Corporation will issue a UID (Unique Identification) card for every property, containing all related details. Compared to traditional property plates, the UID card will be easier to maintain and more durable.
Joint Municipal Commissioner Dr Jai Inder Singh stated that the survey is beginning from Ward No. 3, specifically in Blocks A, B, C and D of Ranjit Avenue, where the teams will go door-to-door to collect data.
He appealed to the citizens to cooperate fully with the survey teams and provide accurate information. The digital mapping will help the Municipal Corporation in upgrading city infrastructure, improve town planning, enhance public transport system, and strengthen emergency services.
