A series of events were held across the district to mark the Day of Mother Language, with educational institutions organising functions to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Punjabi language.

The ‘Adhiapak Sahitik Manch, Chhehtra’ hosted a special event at Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Sarhali, which saw a large turnout of literary personalities from across the district. Dr Jasbir Singh Gill, the college principal, presided over the function, while speakers such as Prof Paramjit Singh Meesa, Harpal Singh Sandhawalia (retired District Education Officer) and Gurcharan Singh Lali emphasised the importance of preserving the Punjabi language and its deep-rooted connection to the region’s religious and cultural heritage. They also acknowledged the challenges faced by Punjabi in competing with other languages and the importance of promoting and safeguarding it.

The speakers urged the audience to learn other languages to broaden their knowledge but stressed the significance of nurturing one’s mother tongue. Prominent authors, including Dharminder Singh Chheena, Balkar Singh Valtoha, Karaj Singh, Jaswinder Singh and Paramjit Kaur, also shared their thoughts on the history and preservation of the Punjabi language.
