Nambardars stage protest, demand Rs 5,000 allowance

The Punjab Nambardar Union today staged a protest at the Chabal Chowk in Tarn Taran to press for their demands and later took out a march in the city. The agitating nambardars also lodged protest in front of the residence of Harmeet Singh Sandhu, the ruling AAP candidate for the Tarn Taran byelection, and insisted on accepting their demands.

Surjit Singh Nanhera, state executive president of the organisation, led the agitating nambardars. On this occasion, Surjit Singh Nanhera and Rashpal Singh, (Khadoor Sahib) state general secretary of the organisation, along with various district presidents and leaders of the organisation, including Varinder Chaudhary, Harbhajan Singh Bodewal, Karamjit Singh Anmol, Hardarshan Singh, Gurdev Singh, Amritpal Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Kulwant Singh, Shingara Singh and Lakhna Dalbir Singh, addressed the gathering.

The speakers demanded that their allowance be increased to Rs 5,000, the post of the nambardar be made hereditary and toll be waived for them. The speakers also asked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to adopt a serious approach in his speeches, leaving aside jokes, etc. They also asked the people of Tarn Taran to avoid falling prey to the ‘lies and misleading propaganda’ of AAP during the byelection campaign. The organisation warned of holding a massive protest here on November 6 in case a meeting was not held with the Chief Minister regarding their current demands. The protesters later raised slogans against the government.
