Apart from insanitary conditions, there is no operational firefighting system at Nehru Shopping Complex located on the Lawrence road here. The first commercial project — Nehru Shopping Complex —developed by the state government is crying for attention.

Hardly any fire extinguishing mechanism is visible in the complex except in its basement. Lying non-operational, the firefighting equipment has gathered rust. At several places in the complex, wooden and glass cases of the firefighting system are broken.

A store owner, on condition of anonymity, said, “The overall condition of the complex is deplorable. The condition of the parking area is no different. One can easily spot mounds of garbage. The complex premises stinks.”

Despite have ample space and multi-storey parking, the Amritsar Improvement Trust has not provided modern amenities at the complex. On the other hand, private plazas and shopping malls on Lawrence Road and adjoining Mall Road are abuzz with shoppers.
