Over 8,000 drug peddlers held since March: Mundian

VDC/WDC members, sarpanches pledge to fight against drugs

Cabinet minister Hardeep Singh Mundian reiterated Punjab Government’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace, emphasising that with public support, the state government will soon eliminate this social evil.

At a Nasha Mukti Morcha event today, alongside Cabinet minister Harbhajan Singh ETO, Mundian administered an oath to thousands of Village Defence Committee (VDC) members, Ward Defence Committee (WDC) members, sarpanches and numberdars to unite in the fight against drugs.

Mundian highlighted that Punjab’s anti-drug campaign has gained significant momentum, with the state police arresting over 8,000 drug smugglers since March 1, 2025. He urged citizens to join the movement, stating, “It is our collective responsibility to eliminate drug peddlers to secure a safe future for our society.”

Cabinet minister Harbhajan Singh ETO announced that the Punjab Government has established de-addiction centres in every district, including a 700-bed facility in Amritsar. He emphasised that Chief Minister Mann has set a deadline of May 31, 2025, to make Punjab drug-free, a goal achievable with widespread public support.

ETO also called for active participation in the Nasha Mukti Yatra, starting May 7, and praised the border area residents for their support in this noble cause.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney and SSP (Amritsar Rural) Maninder Singh also outlined the administration’s efforts to raise awareness about the ill effects of drugs and enforce strict measures against drug peddlers.

Prominent attendees included MLAs Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar, Dr Ajay Gupta, Jivanjot Kaur, Jasbir Singh Sandhu, Dalbir Singh Tong, Mayor Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia, Karmjit Singh Rintu and DIG Satinder Singh.
