Amritsar, February 23
People from all walks of life participated in an awareness run for cleanliness and fitness here on Sunday. Hundreds of schoolchildren took to ‘plogging’ as a symbolic gesture and pledged to inculcate it in their lifestyle.
The GI Rendezvous, an academic organisation with socially productive activities, highlighted the vision behind the event to maintain clean and healthy atmosphere and also to reduce diseases.
Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu thanked city residents in the presence of ADC Dr Himanshu Aggarwal, Civil Surgeon Dr Prabhdeep Kaur Johal and SDM Shivraj Singh Bal. He also welcomed special guests, including Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu and GOC Maj Gen Vikram Singh.
Awards of Excellence were presented to city residents, including Asian Games gold medalist Arpinder Singh(in proxy); Dr Preetam Singh (a skiing competitor); Dr Gagandeep Singh Grover, for his work on Punjab model of hepatitis C along with the Department of Hepatology, PGIMER (Chandigarh); and Indian Medical Association president Dr Rabinder Singh Sethi, for their achievements.
Five and 10-km race was organised at the event that started from Guru Nanak Stadium here. In the 10-km men’s event, Sham Sharma stood first, Balbir Kumar second and Tarun third run. While, Shruti Mahajan bagged first position, Barinder Kaur second and Dr Vandana Sharma won third position in the women’s event.
In the 5-km men’s event, Manpreet Singh came first, Rahul second and Rohan Sharma was third. While, Jashanpreet Kaur was first, Suman and Ramandeep Kaur stood second and third, respectively at the women’s event.
Medals were presented to all the participants above the age of 50 who completed the 10-km race. Medals were also presented to first 50 finishers in all the categories.
